How Computer
Programming Works - by Dan Appleman
Learn the basics of computer science by the author of
"Always Use Protection". Full color
illustrations help make tough concepts clear. It's the
book you should read before you read a beginner's
programming book, regardless of what language you want to
learn.

Learn to Program Using Any
Web Browser - by Harold Davis
Every browser includes a built-in programming language
called Javascript (or Jscript) that's surprisingly
powerful and easy to use. It's also free. That makes it a
great way for beginners who are just starting out. This is
my favorite book right now for first time programmers,
especially after you've read "How Computer
Programming Works" :-) Buy

The Shockwave
Rider - by John Brunner
I have a 1975 edition of this amazing book. You'll be
astonished how much of it has come true - and what may yet
come true will make you nervous. From viruses to worms, to
a person who can rewrite a his complete identity on a home
computer, it's a great story that will leave you thinking.

The Moon is a
Harsh Mistress - by Robert A. Heinlein
My book teaches that the greatest security
vulnerabilities come from our own mistakes and
carelessness. Imagine what might happen if computers ever
do become intelligent. One might choose on its own to
break its own security - with results that could be
revolutionary (in more ways than one). By one of the
greatest SF authors in history. Highly recommended! Buy

Beyond Fear
- by Bruce Schneier
This one isn't a light read, but it's a great book for
those of you who would like to learn more about security
(not just computer security). It's a great book to read
after you've seen Bowling
for Columbine, adding depth the idea that fear often
leads to irrational security decisions. Many examples deal
with reaction to terrorism post 9/11. Buy
